May Ebonized Serving Spatula Prototype

May Ebonized Serving Spatula Prototype

This prototype spatula is a full size kitchen tool at 13” long with a 3.5” square flipping surface. The handle is angled upwards from the base that’s only possible by starting with a very sick piece of walnut.

This spatula was made from black walnut and then “ebonized.” The process involves using a safe dye made from iron and vinegar to react with the natural tannins in the wood, leaving a smoky coal look. The ebonized finish can be expected to fade over time with exposure to light and moisture, but will develop into an aged patina unique to your spoon.
